Risky Business

There are certain acts in dance music who I consider untouchable... Dance music royalty. Remixing their tracks is always going to be risky. Sure you get lots of quick attention due to the popularity of the artists - but you also need to back it up with some quality work. Step up Hana Yori Kichou Na.

Based out of Luxembourg, Hana Yori Kichou Na recently captured our attention with an excellent release on Shiny Disco Club - but today I want to focus on his remixing skills.  Le Knight Club (Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Eric Chedeville) released Palm Beat back in 2002 and even though it still sounds fresh, HYKN has given it a beautiful refresh for the dancefloor.

Le Knight Club - Palm Beat (Hana Yori Kichou Na Remix) by Hana Yori Kichou Na

Next on the Dance music royalty list: Alan Braxe. Braxe's debut single "Vertigo" dropped way back in 1997, and HYKN's 'Virgo Est De Retour' remix breathes some new life into this beast:

Vertigo (Hana Yori Kichou Na 'Virgo Est De Retour' Remix) by Hana Yori Kichou Na

Now we don't want to upset those robots... So lets move onto a remix of a Thomas Bangalter classic too: Colossus. From the 1998 release "Trax On Da Rocks Vol.2", NYKN kept this one simple... Yet still very effective:

Thomas Bangalter - Colossus (Hana Yori Kichou Na Remix) by Hana Yori Kichou Na

Last but not least - NYKN has remixed an absolute classic Daft Punk track: Musique. We all know and love this Thomas Bangalter/Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo tune - And NYKN has again turned in a fantastic take on it, focusing on the vocal loop:

Daft Punk - Musique (Hana Yori Kichou Na 'Excuse Me' Remix) by Hana Yori Kichou Na

So while remixing the biggest names in dance music can be extremely risky - Hana Yori Kichou Na proved he has the skills to back it up.

The 2 Bears

The 2 Bears are the duo of Joe Goddard & Raf Rundell. Both bring a wealth of musical talent to the table (Joe a founding member of Hot Chip, and Raf as Greco-Roman Soundsystem) and have a knack for making great house music.

While it may still be June, I think these fellas have made the biggest track of the summer! "Bear Hug" from their 3rd EP is everything I love about house music. Just try listening to this without smiling!

Bear Hug by The 2 Bears

Has a great music video too:

The 2 Bears are also world class remixers. There take on Toddla T's "Take It Back" is one of those cross-over gems that reminds me of old school UK garage vibes:

Toddla T - Take It Back (The 2 Bears Remix) by The 2 Bears

Church, from their Curious Nature EP is another personal favorite. Such a simple, yet beautiful track - Their production skills really shine here. The layering of vocals are just epic, and really take the breaks to another level:

Here Comes Another One EP

Dark and Stormy (aka john morabito) has been getting some well deserved attention for his deep tech-house sound. The quality of his work has continued to blossom with each new release, and 2011 stands to be a very big year for John.

Dark and Stormy's "Here Comes Another One EP" was released today on Deep Nota Records and features 4 brand new tracks. "I'm A Freak" kicks things off with a killer groove, and sets the tone for the release:

I'm A Freak by DARK & STORMY

"M-Train" is my favorite track on the EP. I just love the funky bassline... some real deep dark sexy vibes here. I can just picture this going off at 4am in the club:

M-Train by DARK & STORMY

Picking up the pace again, "Here Comes An Other One" has some of John's signature drum work, with some massive drops:

Here Comes An Other One by DARK & STORMY

Finally, the EP closes out with "Bump It". Another great groove here, with some funky bass:

Bump It by DARK & STORMY

Overall a really strong release from one of Boston's best up-and-coming acts. Be sure to pick this up on Juno or Beatport. John also sounds great live - So keep an eye out for his sets in Boston and NYC.

Enjoy,

Holiday/Strawberry Letter 23 Remixes

Montauk are a Swedish duo (Johan Cederberg & Victor Holmberg) who won us over with their epic track Holiday back in 2010.

Luscious piano, funky bass and great vocals - They had us all craving our own holiday. Seeing as it was a Holiday weekend, and I happened to be listening to this track... I decided to make a little remix for the club!

Montauk - Holiday (GMGN Remix) by gmgndjs

Sometimes inspiration can come from strange places. I've always been a massive fan of The Brothers Johnson, and found myself becoming obsessed with Strawberry Letter 23 again, after hearing it in Jackie Brown.

It must have been easily a year since I last remixed one of their tracks... So couldn't help myself!

Both tracks are available for free downloads.

On Rotation

This week, i've mostly been listening to.....

She Said Disco's delightful remix of our track "The Meat."

Due out in April on Mozzarella Records, she has completely reinvented the original track... and I absolutely love it. It slowly builds with pitched down samples and keys, creating a really unique vibe. Great production, great artwork... Another artist to watch in 2011.

GMGN - The Meat (She said disco remix) by She said disco

Be sure to check out her other work, including a fantastic DJ mix that i've been bumping on repeat: http://soundcloud.com/shesaiddisco

I recently discovered Mord Fustang on BBC radio... and frankly i'm late to the party on this one. Hailing from Estonia, MF's Milky Way sounds like a French Deadmau5,  full of synthy goodness. Check out this preview, and go buy on beatport:

Milky Way by Mord Fustang

Released a few days ago on La Bombe, Blende's Egypto is massive, plain and simple. The epic synthy breakdown has Daft Punk-esqe guitars... Just love the funky attitude this one has:

Blende - Egypto by La Bombe

Last but not least, some great tech-house from local producer Dark & Stormy. This dude just gets better and better with each new track - and this is personally my favorite thus far:

The Dauphin

Young Digerati are a great new band out of San Francisco and one to keep a close eye on in 2011.

They were four students with nothing in common, faced with spending detention together in their high school library. At 7:00am, they had nothing to say, but by 4:00pm they had bared their souls to each other and became good friends.  There was John, otherwise known as Johnatron, whose music, both produced and remixed, has been played around the world by prominent artists including Justice and Phonat. Frank, at times known as Frankie Teardrop, was a seasoned musician who had spent years releasing and touring the country with many artists on many labels. Jeff, the singer-songwriter, possessed pop sensibilities that had captivated audiences around the country in acts such as INTL. And Will, a well respected artist whose visual prowess had reached beyond the painted canvas. To the outside world they were simply the Mod, the Preacher's Kid, the Hipster, and the DJ. But to each other, they would always be YOUNG DIGERATI.

Their debut EP is available for free download, and features remixes by some really talented artists. The original is catchy pop music at it's best:

Young Digerati - The Dauphin by youngdigerati

Included on the EP is four remixes of The Dauphin, including our own remix! We went for a big synthy sound, and I'm really please with the outcome:

Young Digerati - The Dauphin (GMGN Remix) by youngdigerati

Ride The Universe has continued their streak of amazing remixes... I really love their sound:

Young Digerati - The Dauphin (Ride the Universe Remix) by youngdigerati

Muffin might be the best producer you've never heard of... really hope to see some more new music from him soon:

Young Digerati - The Dauphin (Muffin Remix) by youngdigerati

Whorer House kill it with their big electro sound... This is dirty:

Young Digerati - The Dauphin (Whorer House Remix) by youngdigerati

A great debut EP from some very talented (and cool) dudes... Can't wait to hear the 2nd EP!

Floatin my boat

Time for another random selection of tracks that have been floating my boat over the past couple of weeks.

Most the electronic world instantly takes notice whenever Erol Alkan releases a new piece of music, and his rework of Tame Impala is up to his usual high quality. I love the reverbed guitars... but this one is all about that bassline.

Tame Impala - Why Won't You Make Up Your Mind (Erol Alkan ReWork)

Speaking of hyped producers... Fake Blood recently posted his Noah And The Whale's remix - and its everything we love about Fake Blood.

Noah And The Whale - "L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N" - FAKE BLOOD Mix by Fake Blood

Next up is a beautiful take on Gorillaz's Empire Ants by Miami Horror. Great to hear some new music from this top notch Auzzie act.

Gorillaz - Empire Ants (Miami Horror Remix)

Empire Ants - Gorillaz (Miami Horror Remix) - Mastered by Miami Horror (Official)

Chilly Gonzales' Ivory Tower was one of my favorite albums of 2010. It's not the most dancefloor friendly album - so step in Fare Soldi, who have given their magic touch to You Can Dance.

Another great Robyn remix - this time by Drop Out Orchestra. Love the funky vibe on this one.

And lets finish things off with something a little deeper from Julio Bashmore.

Back to Paris

House De La Funk (based out of Colombia) recently released his first EP on one of our favorite labels: Mozzarella Records. The EP features 6 tracks of pure funky disco basslines... Everything we come to expect and love from Mozzarella records.

My personal favorites are "The Magic Side Of The Life" and "Who Am I"... but you can be sure this entire EP will make it into our DJ sets.

2011: Boom

Happy new year to all. Hope everyone is as excited about the new year as I am! Lets get things started off on the right foot here at Dirty Moves - With some amazing music.

First up is an epic remix by Mylo. While we are all getting tired of waiting for a new album - this certainly helps ease the pain. In fact - I'd settle for a few more remixes of this caliber! I'm obsessed with the bassline in this beast.

Villa - Beats Of Love - Mylo remix

Duck Sauce have turned in a great remix of Chromeo's Hot Mess (Featuring Elly from La Roux). Nice to hear AVH and A-Trak doing something non-sample based - and as always, killing it.

Chromeo - "Hot Mess" (Duck Sauce Remix)

Second City Rhythm (the production duo of Ghosts of Venice and Adulture) have just released the 2nd track of their partnership - and its a house monster! Great vocal and bassline - and with the usual clean execution you would expect from both. This one is going right into the DJ sets.

You Got Me by Second City Rhythm

N'Joy's new mix of Leon Ware's "Inside Your Love" is a beautiful track... been listening to this one on repeat since I first heard it. His production just keeps getting better and better... 2011 should be a massive year for him!

Leon Ware - Inside Your Love (N'Joy Remix) by N'Joy

Another great Disco House track, this time from Silver Disco. His remix of Club Flamingo's "Nobody" is a dance floor killer with some awesome house breaks. Josh continues to put out amazingly funky tunes.

Club Flamingo - Nobody (Silver Disco Remix) by Silver Disco

And finally... Lets finish things off with one of Boston's finest acts: The Nightriders. Released on Rising Music Records, "Hey!" is going to make the world take notice of these fellas! Along with Soul Clap, they are really helping putting Boston on the dance floor map.
